traditional wilderness living.

Winter is often the forgotten season when it comes to backcountry
wilderness pursuits, yet is has a beauty and magic unto itself. Join
the experienced staff of Earth Tracks & Northern Edge Algonquin to learn
many of the skill sets that turn winters forgotten wilderness into a
safe and educational playground. We will start with the basics of winter
safety, travel by snow shoe and cross country skis, and learn how to be
comfortable and warm on those cold winter nights. From this point we will
begin to really hone in on the skills of a winter explorer and learn to see the world through the eyes of the naturalist.
Not only will we learn about camping at this time of year , we will focus on such topics as winter plant & tree Identification, water collection, wildlife tracking, advanced winter shelter building, and much much more.

Algonquin Winter Expedition
January 26-31, 2010 Price: $749/person inclusive
This trip will be a way to discover and connect with the natural world during the stillness of the winter season. We will spend the first night at our beautiful eco-lodge preparing for our journey into the majestic Algonquin wilderness. This expedition will focus on winter camping techniques and wilderness travel. Learn how to move safely and comfortably through this winter landscape and build snow shelters utilizing the resources that surround us. On our journey together we will begin to look at nature as a whole and begin to understand the ‘inter-connectedness’ of all things. Unlocking the many mysteries of the natural world and beginning to look at things with a new ecological perspective. This trip is open to the beginner, but does require a moderate level of fitness. Winter Wildlife Tracking (Formerly called The Science and Art of Tracking)

Develop animal tracking skills and spend time developing the intuitive side of tracking. Retreat attendees will develop their awareness and much broader appreciation of the instinctual nature of what it means to live as a human being.
Learn the basics of tracking large and small animals who make their home in and around Algonquin Park, Ontario. Learn how they relate to their environment and the role they play in maintaining a balanced ecosystem. Learn the basics of tracking, including track identification and analysis, gait patterns, sign tracking, scat identification, how to follow a trail and develop their naturalist skills.
